March for Palestine

Palestinian Youth Movement hosts march outside outside Place des Arts Metro on Oct. 5.

On Oct. 5, hundreds gathered outside Place des Arts Metro to march in recognition of the International Day of Justice. The event, hosted by the Palestinian Youth Movement (PYM), received support from various labour unions, student groups, lawyers, and activists. Protestors criticized Israel's military operations in Gaza and Lebanon, with many calling for a ceasefire.

"The heroes of Gaza have put the word 'Palestine' on the agenda of every world leader," said Sarah Shamy, a representative of the PYM, addressing the crowd. She added, "Lebanon, like Gaza, will become a place where Zionism goes to die," drawing cheers from the audience.

Many participants attended the event wearing Palestinian flags, while music played from speakers. Vendors sold keffiyehs and pro-Palestinian merchandise to raise funds for Gaza aid relief.

Police maintained a presence at the demonstration. Tensions were notably high in Montreal on Oct. 7, 2024, marking the one-year anniversary of the Hamas-led military invasion of Israel. Since the start of the conflict, Israel has reported 726 soldier fatalities, while Gaza's health ministry reports 42,000 Palestinian deaths resulting from Israeli retaliation.
